How to Clean Different Types of Flooring

Figuring out the correct way to clean different types of surfaces can be tricky. Here is a quick guide to help decide which products to use on your floors when cleaning. As always you should do a test in an unseen area with any new product to make sure it doesn't damage the surface.

The first step for any flooring should be sweeping or vacuuming the surface free of debris and dust.

Vinyl floors can be mopped with a mixture of one cup of apple cider vinegar to gallon of warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Tile floors can be mopped with either a commercial cleaning solution  or a mixture of 1/2 cup of white vinegar to gallon of warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Marble floors can be easily damaged so use extra care when selecting a cleaner. Make sure you test a patch of floor before you try any cleaner for the first time. Marble floors should be cleaned with a mild soap and warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Hardwood floors should only be mopped with a slightly damp mop to avoid water damage. Using vinegar can damage hardwood floors so it is best to use a mild commercial cleaner made for wood. Be sure to rinse the floors after with a damp mop and quickly dry them.
