Organize Your Linen Closet

Cupboards and closets can easily fall into the "out of sight, out of mind" category when organizing your spaces. A linen closet is a useful, yet small space that can be kept organized if thought out correctly.

The first step to keeping an organized linen closet is to create areas for each type of object you plan on keeping in there. Labeled baskets can be used to keep linens, towels or toiletries separated. Don't be afraid of installing smart shelving if you don't have enough different areas.

For convenience, linen sets should be stored together. Avoid having to topple the whole closet to find that last pillowcase. Ribbons or bags can be used to keep each set together.

The door is often underused in linen closets. Shelving or racks can be hung on the door to make maximum use of the linen closet storage space. The door can also be an out of the way area to keep your ironing board.

Some objects kept in your linen closet may be better suited to be rolled or folded. Large towels may be more compact folded flat while smaller ones might take up less space rolled and in a bin. Experiment with your closet to maximize the usage of this small storage space.

Tips for Organizing and Keeping Your Dorm Clean

A tiny dorm room can become a cluttered and dirty mess very quickly. Here are some tips to keeping a clean and organized study, living, sleeping, and eating area.

Optimize the space you have. Containers can be used as storage under the bed instead of taking up space in the closet. Wall space can be fully used with shelves hangers or hooks. When all of your items have a designated place it's much easier to keep your small area tidy.

Routinely empty trash bins, wash dishes and clean up spills. The last thing you want is an infestation in your dorm room. Old food debris attracts mice, rats, and roaches, all which probably already live in your dorm building. The only way to keep your room free of pests is to remove anything they can feed on immediately.

Keep surfaces organized. A cluttered and messy desk doesn't help when studying. Take a few minutes to put papers in drawers, wash out your coffee mug, and put away unused items on your desk. A clutter-free desk will help you focus.

Put dirty clothes in a laundry bin. Everyone dreads laundry day, but it can become much worse (and smellier) if you have to pick up dirty underwear from 5 different hidden areas around your dorm.

How to Clean Different Types of Flooring

Figuring out the correct way to clean different types of surfaces can be tricky. Here is a quick guide to help decide which products to use on your floors when cleaning. As always you should do a test in an unseen area with any new product to make sure it doesn't damage the surface.

The first step for any flooring should be sweeping or vacuuming the surface free of debris and dust.

Vinyl floors can be mopped with a mixture of one cup of apple cider vinegar to gallon of warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Tile floors can be mopped with either a commercial cleaning solution  or a mixture of 1/2 cup of white vinegar to gallon of warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Marble floors can be easily damaged so use extra care when selecting a cleaner. Make sure you test a patch of floor before you try any cleaner for the first time. Marble floors should be cleaned with a mild soap and warm water. Dry the floor with a dry mop then mop the floors again with only water. Be sure to dry excess water with a dry mop.

Hardwood floors should only be mopped with a slightly damp mop to avoid water damage. Using vinegar can damage hardwood floors so it is best to use a mild commercial cleaner made for wood. Be sure to rinse the floors after with a damp mop and quickly dry them.

Cleaning out your closet!

The last thing you want to be doing every morning is rummage through clothes you don't wear anymore, one sided shoes, and mounds of clothing that once hung on hangers in your closet. No matter how neat you start out or how large of a closet you have, regular maintenance is needed for an organized and stress free closet.

The following are some tips to keep your closet tidy and functional.

Stay up to date on laundry. Your closet can easily become one of the smelliest areas of your bedroom. Opt to throw that sweater you've been wearing for a week in the laundry instead of back into the closet. Have an area for worn clothes that don't need to be washed yet separate from the general closet area to avoid clean clothes becoming musky.

Inventory clothing and donate items you don't use anymore. The largest cause of clutter in closets is lack of space. If you haven't worn clothes from 10 years ago in 10 years it might be time to donate them. Do something good for those in need as well as free up some space for the items you care about.

Store items that can be damaged with care. Items like shoes can be damaged if not stored properly. Pack shoes in racks or boxes to protect them. Consider garment bags for suits and formal dresses. Beading or embroidery can get ripped in a packed closet.

Clean your closet. Like every other room in your house, your closet should be routinely cleaned. Vacuum the floor and wipe down shelves to get rid of dust and debris that might end up in your closet.

Keeping a Clean Home with a Disability

Living on your own with a disability can be a challenging experience, especially when you have a home to maintain. Many who opt to live independently with illnesses or physical disabilities employ a maid to help keep their home clean and hygienic to live in.

An organized and tidy home can help when maneuvering around with a physical disability. Clear walkways can help avoid falls and injuries. Your home should feel safe and comfortable to be in.

To prevent contamination, kitchen areas should be disinfected and sterilized after food preparation and bathrooms should be kept clean. The last thing someone with a disability or illness needs is an infection caused by a dirty home.

A bedroom is a place for relaxation, but it can be a headache to clean. Replacing bed sheets and doing laundry may be difficult for those with disabilities.

A disability doesn't mean you have to live in a cluttered and dirty home.

If you need help keeping your home or office clean we are available to assist. We offer professional maid services to the greater Los Angeles area including Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Studio City, Burbank and more. Visit our homepage below to view testimonials from our satisfied customers.

The History of Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year again. The flowers are in bloom, the air is warming up, and people are going outside again. Time to open those windows and do some spring cleaning. But why has this become "a thing"?

According to Wikipedia...

Some researchers trace the origin of spring cleaning to the Iranian Nowruz, the Persian new year, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians continue the practice of khaneh tekani (Persian: literally "shaking the house") just before the Persian new year. Everything in the house is thoroughly cleaned, from the drapes to the furniture.

Another possibility has been suggested that the origins of spring cleaning date back to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the springtime festival of Passover (Pesach). In remembrance of the Israelites' hasty flight from Egypt following their captivity there, during the week-long observance of the Passover holiday, there are strict prohibitions against eating or drinking anything which may have been leavened or fermented with yeast (Exodus 12:15, 19). Jews are not only supposed to refrain from leavened foodstuffs (chametz), they are expressly commanded to rid their homes of even small remnants of chametz for the length of the holiday (Exodus 12:15). Therefore, observant Jews conduct a thorough "spring cleaning" of the house, followed by a traditional hunt for chametz crumbs (bedikat chametz) by candlelight on the evening before the holiday begins.

Traditionally, the Catholic church thoroughly cleans the church altar and everything associated with it on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, in the Spring. Spring cleaning persists today in Greece, and other Orthodox nations. It is traditional to clean the house thoroughly either right before or during the first week of Great Lent, which is referred to as Clean Week. This also often corresponds with the Julian New Year, or April 1.

In North America and northern Europe, the custom found an especially practical value due to those regions' continental and wet climates. During the 19th century in America, prior to the advent of the vacuum cleaner, March was often the best time for dusting because it was getting warm enough to open windows and doors (but not warm enough for insects to be a problem), and the high winds could carry the dust out of the house. This time of year is also when coal furnaces wouldn't run and you could wash all the soot from the walls and furniture left by the furnace. For the same reason, modern rural households often use the month of March for cleaning projects involving the use of chemical products which generate fumes.

So there you have it, it's a multi-cultural thing humans have done for a long time.

Clean Carpets

There are a variety of ways to clean a carpet, each offering different advantages and disadvantages. It is a known fact that a clean carpet can help the appearance of your home as well as the general cleanliness. Carpet cleaning also reduces dust, dander, and other allergens in the home, which can improve your well being.

Here are the different ways you can clean a carpet:

Hot Water Extraction (HWE)
Sometimes incorrectly called "steam cleaning", hot water extraction is considered the best way to clean a carpet. It usually uses a combination of hot water and detergent applied with specialized equipment to clean a carpet. Certain kinds of carpet may react to this treatment differently, so it is best to seek professional help to avoid carpet damage, mold growth, and other nasty issues.

Dry Cleaning (VLW)
Dry cleaning a carpet is another method for carpet cleaning which often requires specialized equipment. It is sometimes favored because of the very fast drying time. Dry cleaning a carpet is also considered less labor intensive. There are a variety of ways to dry clean a carpet,  some of which may cause more wear on your carpet. As with hot water extraction, its best to consult a professional to avoid or minimize damage.

Vacuum
If your carpet does not need a deep cleaning, household vacuums are a reasonable option. This will help pick up and reduce dust and dirt from the carpet.

Stain Removal Products
If you have a carpet stain, it is best to treat it as a soon as possible. There are a variety of products on the market to do this. As with the above methods, certain types of carpet can be damaged easily. So it is best to read instructions thoroughly and/or consult a professional.
