Keeping you Home Dust Free this Winter

With everyone's busy holiday schedule it can be hard to maintain your home. One of the easiest chores to forget is dusting.

Here are some tips on keeping your home dust free during the holidays.

Don't be vacuum shy. Dusting can sometimes result in moving dust from one spot just for it to settle in another. Dusting with a vacuum is the best way to remove the dust from the area.

It's best practice to dust from high areas down to the floor. This way the residual and settling dust from the area you're working on doesn't end up in an area you've already dusted.

Don't be afraid to dust underneath and on your furniture. Dust is sometimes hidden underneath couches and tables. Sneezing every time you sit in your favorite couch might mean it's time to vacuum the cushions and maybe even turn it over and vacuum underneath it.

Try to spot all the surfaces that dust can settle on in your home. Once you know the places dust can settle it's easier to keep on top of dusting those areas before it builds up. These areas include door trim, window sills, baseboards, ceiling fans, staircases, picture frames, shelves etc.

Thanksgiving Prep!

The Holiday Season is on it's way with Thanksgiving right around the corner! Make sure you're ready  to entertain your friends and family with a clean house.

The kitchen can become a family gathering area when preparing the Thanksgiving feast. Be sure to start the long day in the kitchen off clean. Food prep areas should be de-cluttered and disinfected before any sort of kitchen prep begins. When there's going to be multiple cooks in the kitchen, clean and tidy surfaces, tools, utensils and dishes makes everything that much simpler.

For those who choose to spend the day watching football the living room becomes the primary environment for the day. Be sure to tidy the area and de-clutter coffee table space for game snacks and beverages. Create a welcoming and clean living room for your guests to enjoy the game no matter the outcome.

Thanksgiving always ends in a feast of epic portions. If unused, the dining room often becomes cluttered making for stressful and cramped meals. Everyone looks forward to a clean dining table complete with sparkling plates, glasses, and dinnerware.

Getting ready for House Guests

With the holiday season coming up it's that time of year to dust out and de-clutter your guest room or guest house. It's easy to store your beloved yet rarely used possessions in your guest area only to have a mad rush to clean it when relatives are on their way to spend the weekend.
Here are the areas that should be kept clean and tidy to assure a relaxing stay for your guests.

The Bed
After a long trip an inviting bed can make or break your house guests stay. Make sure there is nothing on the bed that shouldn't be there, including stored items and knickknacks. The linens should be recently laundered and matching for a fresh and comfy rest.

Closet Space
To make sure guests have storage for their clothing and luggage, also, be sure to provide them with a neat and tidy closet with extra room. Let your guests unpack and make themselves at home It's always nice to be able to hang up clothing with a tendency to wrinkle.

Dust
Be sure to dust all the surfaces in your guest area. Dust can contribute to allergies and difficulty sleeping for your house guests.

If your guest area is a guest house there are a few other areas to be sure to keep clean. Make sure bathrooms and kitchens are clean and odor free. This means disinfecting your areas and making sure they are waste free.

Bathroom Cleaning Day

Even the most renovated bathroom can send your house guests home with an icky feeling if not kept looking clean and germ free.
Here are a few problem areas for  bathroom cleanliness that should be taken care of regularly.

Toilet
The toilet is always the first fixture in the bathroom to get grimy. It's easy to procrastinate cleaning the toilet, but it just gets harder and harder to clean. The best practice for cleaning the toilet is to do so regularly as to not let germs and grime build up. Be sure to use gloves and to clean toilet brushes after every use. Following these rules will keep you safe and your toilet sparkling.

Tiles and Grout

Brown or dingy bathroom tiles and grout can automatically make your bathroom appear nasty. Grout is hard to clean once dirty, and breeds bacteria due to its porous nature.

Towels
Wash and change hand towels regularly to prevent bacteria growth. Moist hand towels can spread bacteria to everyone who touches them.

Sinks
Sink build up and soap scum is definitely gross. Not cleaning sinks can cause moisture build up and rust damage to expensive bathroom sinks and counter tops.

Tips for Keeping Your Condo Clean

Keeping your condo or apartment clean is a tricky and time-consuming job, especially with the limited living and storage space that they offer. It is sometimes difficult keeping clutter under control.

Here are a few tips on keeping small homes clean.

Clean at least once a day.
A small amount of idle time spent cleaning, dusting or de-cluttering can really help with the overall cleanliness of your home. With small homes it is important to keep on top of extra things not put into the correct place. Everyday items can pile up leaving your living space chaotic and unorganized.

Take the Trash out!
Everyone's least favorite chore is essential when living in a small area. It's recommended to empty garbage bins and remove them from your condo at least once a day to prevent odors, or worse, insect infestation. Smell travels fast in a small area, so it's best to avoid them before they start to linger. It is also important to keep on top of cleaning kitty litter and other pet cages regularly to prevent odors.

Keep Laundry Organized
Making sure your dirty laundry is organized and sorted is a great first step to making the task take less time. Also having scheduled laundry days can make sure that the mountain of dirty clothing and long laundry sessions never happens again.

Organize Storage areas
Condos are notorious for having few and small storage areas. Organizing your storage areas can make things a lot easier. If you're not ducking for cover every time you open your closet, it will be more useful and maybe you'll actually find that one blouse you were looking for. Under the sink organization means finding things faster and getting on with your day.

Clean your house to avoid catching colds

Catching a cold is never fun. The sneezing, the grogginess, the discomfort. Who's got time for that? WebMD reveals that the common cold is quite strong and can survive quite a while on a variety of surfaces.

From WebMD:
“Rhinoviruses can survive on doorknobs, table tops, shopping cart handles, and other surfaces for 24 hours or more,” Hendley says.
In one ingenious experiment, Hendley and his colleagues had cold sufferers spend the night in a local hotel room and then asked them to identify what they’d touched during their stay; 35% of everything they touched -- including door handles, pens, light switches, TV remote controls, faucets, and telephones -- turned out to be contaminated with a cold virus.

What this means is that you should regularly clean and disinfect your house and office. If you can't afford to take time off of work, or simply don't want to be sick, be sure to sanitize surfaces you touch and consider using hand sanitizer whenever you touch objects from the outside. Avoid touching your face and wash your hands frequently.

House Cleaning with a Newborn Baby

Thinking about your baby in a dirty nursery is enough to give any parent germ-induced nightmares. Babies contribute to all kinds of messes, filling many nurseries with bacteria and ultimately making an unsafe environment for them to live in.

Before you start, make sure all cleaners being used are safe for your baby. Be sure to read the directions and health/safety messages carefully.

Disinfection Area
Every nursery should have a designated area for disinfection supplies, preferably close to the changing table. Sanitizing your hands after every diaper change can stop the spread of germs and contamination of things your baby can come in contact with. Disinfecting diaper boxes, wipe boxes, and furniture in the changing area regularly can help stop the spread of germs.

Disposal Strategy
Babies are always surprising parents with large messes. It's best to plan ahead and have disposal and soiled laundry areas already in place. Keeping these areas clean and emptying them on a regular basis can prevent contamination to the rest of the room. Dirty clothing, sheets, and wash cloths should be sealed separately and washed as soon as possible.

Determine and Keep on top of Germ heavy areas
Germ-heavy areas in your nursery should be identified and taken care of everyday. Wiping down and removing grime from areas like the crib, door knobs, laundry baskets and playpens with sanitizer will keep the germs at bay.

Swap out cradle linens frequently
Your baby spends a lot of their time dozing in bed, with that said, old bed sheets should be swapped out and washed at least once a week to stop the spread of bacteria. Germs, dirt, allergens and dust in linens can irritate your baby's skin and cause rashes.

Frequently Disinfect your baby's toys
Curious babies put everything into their mouths. Toys should be disinfected and rinsed frequently to make sure your baby is not ingesting harmful germs that could make them sick.

Hygienic Floors
Babies love spending time on the floor. Make sure your floors are hygienic to keep your baby safe. Carpets should be vacuumed regularly to get rid of mold, dust, pet dander, and debris that can get caught in it.

Keep Organized
Organizing your nursery keeps your baby both safe from harm and germs. Scattered toys and clothing can become tripping hazards that could potentially bring harm. Cross contamination can also spread germs when clean and dirty things co-mingle. It's best practice to keep an organized nursery free of clutter.

Cleaning Tips: How to Clean Your Electronics

Part of keeping your home and office clean includes cleaning your electronics. Now a days, people rely on electronics such as laptops, USB accessories, phones and more as part of their daily routines. Ultimately, keeping you electronics clean not only makes them work better, is more hygienic, and will look better to your guests. Below are some useful tips for keeping your electronic devices clean.

Before you proceed, you should check your device owners manuals for any special warnings and/or cleaning instructions.

Screens and Lenses: Most screens can be cleaned by dampening a lint free cloth with some distilled water. Rub the damp cloth over the screen from side to side. Be sure not to put a lot of moisture on the edges of the screen. Use a dry cloth to gently wipe those areas. You can also a 50/50 mixture of alcohol and water to clean and disinfect your device, but be aware that some phones such as iPhone have a special self cleaning coating that will get damaged. Camera lenses may also become damaged by alcohol. Be sure to check your owners manual/documentation.

Keyboards, Mice, controllers, etc: Wipe your accessories down with a clean lint free cloth, dampened with a 50/50 mix of alcohol and water. If you notice debris in the crevices of your devices, such as under the keys of your keyboard, a can of compressed air can be helpful to blow out the particles. Read the compressed air instructions before use.

Vents: Many devices, such as game consoles, computers, and even power transformers have vents for heat. When those vents become clogged by dust, they can cause the device to work less efficiently. Compressed air can be useful for clearing the vents of your devices. You can also use computer or camera duster pens which have anti-static bristles design to loosen up dust in tight areas.

How to clean pet stains from carpet

So, your furry little buddy decided to relieve itself on the carpet. Maybe it got nervous... maybe you forgot to take it out... maybe it's just in it's "golden years"... or maybe it's young. Whatever the reason, cleanup is not too difficult, but there are some useful tips to make cleanup easier and leave less of a trace.

If it's still wet:

  • Don't let it sit there, start soaking up the urine with a lot of paper towels. Let the paper towels absorb the pee. You can also lay some newspaper over the paper towels to absorb more and make picking up the paper towers easier.
  • It can help with training your pet to put the urine towels in the pet's litter box (if applicable).
  • Rinse the pee stained area with cool, clean water, and blot it dry. You may have to do this several times to remove the stain and odor.

If it's already dry:

  • A carpet cleaner is probably the most effective way to remove the stain. You can rent one from your grocery or hardware store usually.
  • After you cleaned it, use a pet odor neutralizer. This should help prevent the pet thinking it should pee there again.
  • If the urine has soaked below the carpet, into the padding, you may need to clean it several times.
  • Don't use a steam cleaner or hot water, as that will cause the stain and odor to go even deeper into the fibers of the carpet.
  • Don't use harsh chemicals such as vinegar and ammonia. The odor of those chemicals may encourage the pet to pee there again to re-mark it's spot (kinda like a competition).
  • It is important to clean the pee stain and remove the odor. If you do not, the pet will think it should continue to use that spot.
  • You should also make it's proper bathroom area easily available.
  • Assuming your pet is healthy (take it to a vet if you suspect a problem), retrain your pet using positive reinforcement.

Spring Cleaning in Santa Monica

Spring cleaning is a tradition that dates back thousands of years in a variety of cultures. It's still a relevant tradition, even in 2017, so it's time to do some spring cleaning.

Might be time to do the dishes too
Spring cleaning involves a variety of things beside actual cleaning. For example, it's a great time to remove generally unneeded clutter from your house. Old objects you no longer use, abandoned repair projects, and worn down items can either be thrown away, donated, or even sold at a garage sale. Typically this time of year also lends itself to dusting since the weather is nice enough to open the windows. This will not only allow the dust to leave the house but can also conveniently provide appropriate ventilation when using any cleaning chemicals.

The tough grime on your stove and in your oven? Might as well take that on too. The longer you let stains sit and repeatedly cook into your surfaces, the harder it will be to remove those nasty stains. If you ever plan on moving or selling your house, this is even more important. Same thing goes with  your bathroom. Get that filthy soap scum layer off the shower. Give the floors a thorough scrubbing to clean up any old dried stains that got missed over time.

All in all, spring cleaning is an important but detailed task that will not only make your home look better, but also make you feel better. Removing the dust, mold, and other contaminants  in your home will make living where you live even better.

Here is a short spring cleaning check list to help you organize the work that you need to do:

  1. Wipe Walls and Ceilings
  2. Reseal Grout
  3. Vacuum and Shampoo Rugs
  4. Dust Books and Shelves
  5. Clean Upholstered Furnishings
  6. Polish Metal Door and Window Hardware
  7. Dust Your Home Thoroughly
  8. Wax Wooden Furniture
  9. Maintain Fire Safety Equipement
  10. Wash Window Screens
  11. Clean Window Drapes, Blinds, etc.
  12. Wax Non-Wood Floors

Tips for Removing Stains from Your Carpet

Having carpet in your home offers a variety of benefits. From improved air quality to providing additional insulation during cold times. Carpets even help reduce slips and falls inside people's home while also reducing the general noise level by absorbing sound.

We won't judge you...
However, there is one thing that can be annoying: Stains

Always an accident, sometimes avoidable. A part of life if you have children. However, fear not. We have some handy tips to remove spots and stains from carpets whether its wine, mustard, or koolaid.

  1. Get two empty spray bottles and two absorbent wash cloths. Fill one bottle with cold water. In the second bottle, mix 1/4 teaspoon dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water.
  2. Spray the detergent bottle onto a wash cloth (not the carpet), and dab it on the spot. Do not rub it. Blot (dry) excess detergent with a clean part of the cloth. Keep doing this until the stain fades away.
  3. Spray the second wash cloth with cold water. Dab the carpet and blot again to dry it. This will rinse out the detergent.
  4. Finally cover the spot with a clean, dry wash cloth, or a stack of paper towels. Place a heavy item on top such as a pot or pan. Let it sit over night to absorb excess moisture and stains left behind. Once morning comes around, let it air dry and fluff the fibers.

Depending on how bad the stain is and your patience, you may have to repeat the procedure. Either way, this will help remove or lighten the stain.

In any case, it does take time to do this. Let the professionals handle your house cleaning. It's healthier and surprisingly affordable! We offer professional maid services to the West Side of Los Angeles including Santa MonicaCulver CityStudio CityBurbank, and more. Tips for Eliminating Odors In Your House

No one likes a smelly house, so we have compiled a small list to help start your year out with a happy nose. Before we begin, it's important to understand that you can only remove an odor if you remove the source of the odor. This means that things like air fresheners and candles mostly act to mask an odor. This can be helpful for a quick fix, but will not give you long term results. In any case, the ultimate aid for deodorizing is fresh air, so if possible, open the windows or set up a fan to ventilate the room in addition to the tips below.

If all else fails, keep these nearby for your nose.

Take out the trash
Regularly take trash out, including bathroom bins and food waste.

Clean your pets
Pets often generate odors. Be sure to keep your pets healthy and happy by cleaning them, with the added benefit of smelling better.

Do your laundry
Dirty clothes can build up a smelly, mildew like odor. Do your laundry regularly to prevent this smell from building up.

Throw away expired food in the fridge
Decaying food is the quintessential smell of garbage. Make sure you regularly check the dates on the food in your fridge. Do a "sniff test" to make sure items have not spoiled. When you're done, wipe down the walls of the fridge with a non-toxic cleaning agent such as a Vinegar.

Vacuum
Vacuuming your carpets, curtains, and upholstery can help remove smells trapped in your home. Be thorough and don't vacuum too quickly. Give the vacuum a chance to suck out all of the unwanted debris. For extreme cases, full on carpet cleaning/shampooing might be necessary.

Wash hard surfaces
Using a deodorizing cleaner such as white vinegar, you can wipe all the hard surfaces in your house. Trouble areas include the kitchen and bathroom. A special type of sponge called a dry sponge can be used on porous surfaces.

Clean the lightbulbs if you smoke
Light bulbs can become coated with smoke residue. When the light bulb heats up it can cause the smoke odor to emit. Clean your lightbulbs carefully to eliminate this odor.

Check vents and outlets for dead animals
As crazy as it sounds, rats often die within in the walls of people's homes. This can cause an unpleasant odor. The wall will be need to be opened up to remove the dead animal and eliminate the smell.

Let the professionals handle your house cleaning. It's healthier and surprisingly affordable!
