The Danger of Cleaning Chemicals

House cleaning is an ordinary task people do on a daily basis. However, there a variety of hidden dangers which can cause people to get sick or even (in extreme cases) die. Particularly, the cleaning chemicals used for house and office cleaning contain many toxins which are harmful.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has compiled information on potential health problems which can be caused by cleaning chemicals. They also highlight a variety of factors which can determine the danger involved with cleaning chemicals:

• Chemical ingredients of the cleaning product;
• How the cleaning product is being used or stored;
• Ventilation in the area where the cleaning product is used;
• Whether there are splashes and spills;
• Whether the cleaning product comes in contact with the skin; and
• Whether mists, vapors and/or gases are released.

All of the factors above can be health issues. Issues can range from skin irritation to problems breathing. Long term effects can include cancer.

OSHA describes several issues in their publication Protecting Workers Who Use Cleaning Chemicals:

"Chemicals in some cleaning products can be irritating to the skin or can cause rashes. Cleaning products that contain corrosive chemicals can cause severe burns if splashed on the skin or in the eyes.

Mists, vapors and/or gases from cleaning chemicals can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Symptoms may include burning eyes, sore throat, coughing, trouble breathing and wheezing. Chemicals in some cleaning products can cause asthma or trigger asthma attacks. Some cleaning products contain hazardous chemicals that can enter the body through skin contact or from breathing gases into the lungs. Mixing cleaning products that contain bleach and ammonia can cause severe lung damage or death."

How to Keep your Computer Desk Clean

For many people, working at the computer is a daily routine. While it may not seem like much happens there, it can become a very dirty place. From dust to germs, there are a variety of hazards which can make your workplace bring you down. Here are few simple tips to help make sure it's more fun to compute.

Dust Frequently
Dust is bad both for humans and machines. While your allergies may disagree with dust, your computer also becomes less efficient when dust blocks the cooling vents. In general, you want to keep your work area as dust free a possible. Computer air dusters can be useful for cleaning your vents, while a damp cloth can help collect dust on most surfaces.

Disinfect Surfaces
Contact between your hands and your work surface is inevitable. Between food, drinks, and general living, your computer desk could take on a slight grime. Even if you can't see it, there are definitely lots of germs on the desk simply from usage. This becomes even more apparent when you share a desk.

Disinfect Computer Accessories
As noted above, everything you touch regularly on the computer can be contaminated with bacteria. This includes computer mice, keyboards, and game controllers (you know... for breaks).

Clean Monitor
For some, a clean monitor is a must, for others, no so much. Either way, it doesn't hurt to clean your monitor to remove any fingerprints, dust, and general dirtiness.

Vacuum
After all the dusting, you definitely want to make sure to vacuum the area if possible. Collecting all the dust will help improve general air quality in the room, plus help your computer stay dust free.

Air Filter
Since dust can be such a problem with computers, an air filter might be a good preventive measure to improve air quality in the room.

With these tips, you should be able to have a happier, cleaner computer desk. Whether you're checking emails or PC gaming, keeping your computer desk clean is essential.

Germs to look out for inside your bathroom

We all know the bathroom is an inherently dirty place. Between bathing, defecation, and all the other private biz we do, there's no shortage of germs. If left uncleaned, dangerous, life threatening organisms and viruses can form right inside your home.

Below is a list of the most dangerous germs that can be found in your bathroom:
  1. Gastrointestinal viruses that cause stomach ailments in humans. These include the norovirus, which you may have heard of in connection with cruise ship outbreaks. These viruses aren't just on cruise ships; they can be exploring your toilet seat as well. Gastrointestinal viruses "are easily transmitted and can remain on a solid surface for as much as a week," says Philip M. Tierno, Jr., PhD, director of clinical microbiology and diagnostic immunology at Tisch Hospital, New York University Medical Center.
  2. Enteric pathogens, which are organisms spread by contaminated foods (and can, of course, be carried in feces). These include things like E. coli, salmonella, shigella, and campylobacter. E. coli O157:H7 is particularly nasty, causing severe diarrhea with bloody stools. "It's the bacteria that killed four children and caused a lot of illness at Jack-in-the-Box restaurants in California in 1993," says Donna Duberg, MA, MS, assistant professor of clinical laboratory science at Saint Louis University.
  3. Skin and respiratory organisms, such as staphylococcus aureus (" staph") bacteria, including the antibiotic resistant MRSA strain, and Group A Strep, known as the "flesh-eating" bacteria.
  4. Dermatophitic fungi, like athlete's foot, transmitted by walking barefoot in the bathroom.
  5. Other residual fungi, like those indigenous to showers -- the "mold and mildew" of bathroom cleanser fame. "They don't cause infection, but they can exacerbate asthma and allergies," says Tierno.

How to Prevent Cockroaches

Free food at your house!
As a maid company, we sometimes come across some of the most filthy homes and offices. Roaches are often a factor to these places, especially out here in Santa Monica. It's important to know what roaches are attracted to, to best prevent the infestation of your home or workplace. Cockroaches are attracted to water, food, and warmth. Give them a warm home with water, and you've just opened the newest roach hotspot. The number one factor in preventing roaches from entering your home is to keep it clean. Simply put, if they don't have easy access to food and water, then they will have no interest in your home.

Below is a list of tips which can help your home stay roach free:

  • Keep your house clean and dry
  • Empty your garbage regularly
  • Avoid keeping smelly trash in the house
  • Make sure your outdoor garbage bin is not directly touching your house
  • Rinse recyclables because residual liquid and food bits inside can attract roaches
  • Dispose of recyclables similarly to trash
  • Keep pantry foods sealed
  • Use boric acid. Very light amounts can help deter roaches, especially near cracks and under home utilities

We can keep your house clean. Cleanliness is really the most important step to pest prevention. We offer professional maid services to the West Side of Los Angeles including Santa MonicaCulver CityStudio CityBurbank, and more. Let us know if you have special cleaning requirements, and we will work with you to accommodate your needs. We service houses, offices, and more!

Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean with Pets

For some of us, owning a pet is more than just having a furry friend. They're a member of the family. But just like any member, they need to have a clean living area. House cleaning is not complete if your pet's area hasn't been cleaned, and to be completely fair, it's an on-going process.

Below are some helpful tips to keep your house clean when you own pets.

Brush Your Pet
"Brushing your dog or cat regularly will decrease the amount of hair in the air and on the floor," says Nancy Katz, DVM, a veterinarian in Montclair, N.J. "Ideally, you should brush your pet a few times a week, just a quick brushing to get the coat out. If you collect it on the brush, it's not on the floor."

Check Your Air Filters
Katz also says, "Check your filters every two to four weeks and determine how much stress you're putting on them; that should let you know how often they need to be changed. If you keep them clean, the less work your heating and cooling system has to do, so you can save money as well."

Keep Litter Boxes Clean
"Your litter box cannot be too clean," says Katz. "Don't clean with an ammonia product, because that mimics the smell of cat urine."

It is generally recommended to completely wash a cat's litter box every 10 days with bleach and dish wash detergent, giving it a thorough scrubbing.

Clean Your Counters
Cats love to walk around on all surfaces. This can include kitchen and bathroom counters. Since cats walk inside their litter box, everything their paws touch is contaminated with fecal matter. This is especially troubling if your cat walks around your food preparation area.

"Always wipe your counters down with a cleansing wipe, or paper towel and cleaning solution, before and after you put food on the counter," advises Donna Duberg, MS, an assistant professor of clinical laboratory science at St. Louis University in Missouri. "Keep things like cutting boards and cutting knives, and other food preparation tools, inside cupboards or drawers."

Keep Your Reptiles and other Caged Pets Living Areas Clean
Reptiles can carry viruses such as shigella and salmonella. It's advisable to wipe down pet habitats once a week with gloves. Wash the pet's bowl and other cage items in your tub or laundry sink. Avoid using your regular sink. Always disinfect the area with bleach afterwards.

Close the Food Containers to Keep Away Insects and Rodents
Keep your pet food supplies in sealed containers such as plastic tubs or bags. This will help keep things like rats and roaches out of your house.

Warning: Be sure to read all instructions on any cleaning supplies you use. Make sure that you're not harming yours or your pets health by using the chemicals.

Cleaning Tip: Top to Bottom

Cleaning your house can be a real project. Certainly with our busy lives, you don't want to invest your time cleaning just to have it still look dirty. With that said, today we offer you a simple, yet important house cleaning tip which is, clean from top to bottom.

Dust, dirt, and other material will naturally settle to the floor as you clean your house. So things such as ceiling fans and window curtains should be first on your list. As you move lower, then work on railings, counters, electronics, and other eye level things. Next, any low objects and surfaces such as floor and wall moldings can be cleaned. Finally, you should vacuum and mop your floors which will clean up the fallen debris and leave your home cleaner and healthier.

By following this handy cleaning tip, it will make the best use of your home cleaning time. As the saying goes: work smarter, not harder. Take it from us, we're maids.

Spring Cleaning 2016 Edition

Spring cleaning is a tradition that dates back thousands of years in a variety of cultures. It's still a relevant tradition, even in 2016, so it's time to do some spring cleaning.

Spring cleaning involves a variety of things beside actual cleaning. For example, it's a great time to remove generally unneeded clutter from your house. Old objects you no longer use, abandoned repair projects, and worn down items can either be thrown away, donated, or even sold at a garage sale. Typically this time of year also lends itself to dusting since the weather is nice enough to open the windows. This will not only allow the dust to leave the house but can also provide appropriate ventilation when using any cleaning chemicals.

The tough grime on your stove and in your oven? Might as well take that on too. The longer you let stains sit and repeatedly cook into your surfaces, the harder it will be to remove those nasty stains. If you ever plan on moving or selling your house, this is even more important. Same thing goes with  your bathroom. Get that filthy soap scum layer off the shower. Give the floors a thorough scrubbing to clean up any old dried stains that got missed over time.

All in all, spring cleaning is an important but detailed task that will not only make your home look better, but also make you feel better. Removing the dust, mold, and other contaminants  in your home will make living where you live even better.

How Cockroaches Can Infest Your Home

There are few things in the world which can make almost anyone jump.
What has super strength, high speed, is nearly indestructible, and can fit into almost any space?

It's a cockroach.

There are over 4,600 different species of cockroaches. They can fit into spaces that are 1/10th their own size and can withstand over 900x their own weight.

As impressive as they may be, they are also considered disgusting and a clear sign of a dirty home. Any home can be a home for cockroaches as long as it has water and food. Cockroaches leave behind a lot of material including fecal matter, saliva, casings, and other debris. This is bad news for people with allergies and/or asthma. To make matters worse, these materials can also carry disease and leave a bad smell.

According to the National Center for Healthy Housing, there are a number of things which can be done to prevent cockroaches:

  • Use materials that are easy to clean. This will make it more difficult for dust mites and mold spores to thrive.
  • Dust is easily removed from smooth and cleanable surfaces (smooth flooring such as wood, tile, linoleum, and vinyl) through vacuuming and mopping.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with high filtration features (high efficiency or HEPA filter).
  • Carpets pose several problems. They are generally more difficult to vacuum effectively than hard surfaces. Also, carpets and the sponge-like pads often installed under carpet can trap moisture once they become wet (due to a plumbing or water leak, flood, or condensation), providing a fertile setting for mold and dust mites.
  • Short- and closed-loop-pile carpets (such as commercial grade carpet) are typically easier to clean than loose-pile carpets where dust and dirt falls through to the underlying material.
  • Clean fabrics and other dust mite havens. The following measures will kill dust mites and reduce allergen levels.
  • Wash sheets in soapy water at 130°F every one or two weeks to kill dust mites. Take blankets to the dry cleaner, hang them outdoors once a year, or wash them frequently.
  • Cover conventional mattresses and pillows with allergen-impermeable covers or dust mite covers (micro-porous material to prevent infestation).
  • Wash soft toys and stuffed animals regularly in hot water, followed by thorough drying. The heat will kill off the mites.
  • Shampoo, steam clean, or beat non-washable rugs and carpets once a year. This removes large particles missed by the vacuum cleaner.
  • Reduce the humidity of your home.

These are often problems that people in Los Angeles have to deal with, especially with the water so close.

We offer professional maid services to the West Side of Los Angeles including Santa MonicaCulver CityStudio CityBurbank and more. Let us know if you have special cleaning requirements, and we will work with you to accommodate your needs. We service houses, offices, and more!

House Cleaning Concerns While Living in a Beach House in the Los Angeles Area

Living near the beach in Los Angeles can be quite awesome. Living ON the beach is even better. However, being so close to all that sand and sea water introduces several challenges to home care.

One of the biggest things you'll need to deal with is the higher-than-usual humidity from being in close proximity to the ocean. This will lead to a higher than usual risk of mold. Some of this can be prevented by ensuring proper ventilation in the house, however special cleaning pre-cautions should also be taken. To make things worse, if you don't keep the area clean, the humidity and mold will just continue to "cake" on to your home.

The next thing is the metal in your house. In general, salt and metal don't go well together. However, special paint and treatments can help them last longer. Ultimately, they should be cleaned regularly to prevent the salt from deteriorating the metal materials as much as possible.

Furniture will also suffer depending on the material. Plastics will fade, and of course metal will deteriorate. Persistent cleaning will definitely help reduce the damage and extend the life of your home and it's furnishings.

These are often problems that residents on the West, coastal area of Los Angeles have to deal with, especially with the water so close in places like Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Manhattan Beach.

We offer professional maid services to the West Side of Los Angeles including Santa MonicaCulver CityStudio CityBurbank and more. Let us know if you have special cleaning requirements, and we will work with you to accommodate your needs. We service houses, offices, and more!
