The History of Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year again. The flowers are in bloom, the air is warming up, and people are going outside again. Time to open those windows and do some spring cleaning. But why has this become "a thing"?

According to Wikipedia...

Some researchers trace the origin of spring cleaning to the Iranian Nowruz, the Persian new year, which falls on the first day of spring. Iranians continue the practice of khaneh tekani (Persian: literally "shaking the house") just before the Persian new year. Everything in the house is thoroughly cleaned, from the drapes to the furniture.

Another possibility has been suggested that the origins of spring cleaning date back to the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the springtime festival of Passover (Pesach). In remembrance of the Israelites' hasty flight from Egypt following their captivity there, during the week-long observance of the Passover holiday, there are strict prohibitions against eating or drinking anything which may have been leavened or fermented with yeast (Exodus 12:15, 19). Jews are not only supposed to refrain from leavened foodstuffs (chametz), they are expressly commanded to rid their homes of even small remnants of chametz for the length of the holiday (Exodus 12:15). Therefore, observant Jews conduct a thorough "spring cleaning" of the house, followed by a traditional hunt for chametz crumbs (bedikat chametz) by candlelight on the evening before the holiday begins.

Traditionally, the Catholic church thoroughly cleans the church altar and everything associated with it on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday, in the Spring. Spring cleaning persists today in Greece, and other Orthodox nations. It is traditional to clean the house thoroughly either right before or during the first week of Great Lent, which is referred to as Clean Week. This also often corresponds with the Julian New Year, or April 1.

In North America and northern Europe, the custom found an especially practical value due to those regions' continental and wet climates. During the 19th century in America, prior to the advent of the vacuum cleaner, March was often the best time for dusting because it was getting warm enough to open windows and doors (but not warm enough for insects to be a problem), and the high winds could carry the dust out of the house. This time of year is also when coal furnaces wouldn't run and you could wash all the soot from the walls and furniture left by the furnace. For the same reason, modern rural households often use the month of March for cleaning projects involving the use of chemical products which generate fumes.

So there you have it, it's a multi-cultural thing humans have done for a long time.

Clean Carpets

There are a variety of ways to clean a carpet, each offering different advantages and disadvantages. It is a known fact that a clean carpet can help the appearance of your home as well as the general cleanliness. Carpet cleaning also reduces dust, dander, and other allergens in the home, which can improve your well being.

Here are the different ways you can clean a carpet:

Hot Water Extraction (HWE)
Sometimes incorrectly called "steam cleaning", hot water extraction is considered the best way to clean a carpet. It usually uses a combination of hot water and detergent applied with specialized equipment to clean a carpet. Certain kinds of carpet may react to this treatment differently, so it is best to seek professional help to avoid carpet damage, mold growth, and other nasty issues.

Dry Cleaning (VLW)
Dry cleaning a carpet is another method for carpet cleaning which often requires specialized equipment. It is sometimes favored because of the very fast drying time. Dry cleaning a carpet is also considered less labor intensive. There are a variety of ways to dry clean a carpet,  some of which may cause more wear on your carpet. As with hot water extraction, its best to consult a professional to avoid or minimize damage.

Vacuum
If your carpet does not need a deep cleaning, household vacuums are a reasonable option. This will help pick up and reduce dust and dirt from the carpet.

Stain Removal Products
If you have a carpet stain, it is best to treat it as a soon as possible. There are a variety of products on the market to do this. As with the above methods, certain types of carpet can be damaged easily. So it is best to read instructions thoroughly and/or consult a professional.

Cleaning Your New Home

Making a fresh start and moving into a new home can be an exciting yet daunting task. There is the anxiety of getting your deposit back or receiving fees from your old home, as well as ensuring that your new home is clean.

Once everything is moved out of your old home, there are a number of tasks to complete before handing over the keys.
This includes a variety of chores that may slip your mind, but might also be specified in your contract.

These tasks may include:
- Dusting all surfaces
- Mopping and wiping down baseboards and walls
- Vacuuming of all carpets and flooring
- A complete cleaning of the kitchen, including appliances and cabinets
- A thorough bathroom cleaning, scrubbing toilets, showers, and bathtubs
- A full cleaning of curtains or other window coverings
- Dusting and cleaning of light fixtures and ceiling fans

Moving in may not be a simple job either. To be certain that your new home is clean and sanitized you might want to do a full cleaning before furniture is brought into the home. This will ensure a safe and clean environment for your family as well as make things easier in the weeks to come of unpacking and setting up your new home.

Maintaining Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring can be a beautiful and durable upgrade from carpeting or tile in your home that often comes at a premium. Hardwood floors should be cleaned routinely to keep them looking their best. Here are some tips on maintaining your hardwood floors.
Prevention of scratches in high traffic areas can keep the wood looking new. Think about putting down floor mats or rugs in entryways and pet areas to avoid scratches. Furniture feet should also be covered in floor protectors to avoid scratches from moving furniture.

- Floors should be cleaned of debris, dust and dirt a couple times a week. A vacuuming and mopping regimen is suggested. Make sure you use a hardwood floor attachment on the vacuum to avoid scratching the floors.

- Floors should also be deep cleaned routinely to get rid of built up grunge. After vacuuming away the dust and debris, mop the floors with a liquid hardwood floor cleaner. Then, rinse the mop in clean water and mop off the liquid cleaner from the floor. The water should then be dried with a clean dry mop or towel.
